Footnotes
SHADOW SURGE set a pressured pace along the inside, moved out to the two path midway on the turn and then was headed nearing the bend while back on the inside, was put to a stiff drive and responded well repelling that bid leaving the furlong marker and edging clear in the final sixteenth to prove best. VOLUNTEER FIREMAN pressed the pace on the outside of the winner from the outset, then made a three wide bid on the turn to go on even terms nearing the quarter pole, gained a short lead leaving the three sixteenths but that rival responded well and came back to edge away in the final sixteenth and had to settle for being clearly second best. HOW ABOUT IT tracked the leaders on the inside, swung out four wide leaving the turn but faded while besting the others. SEEKER'S HOPE chased the early pace and moved out nearing the half mile marker and bumped NICE TRY RILEY, then was three to five wide on the turn and came six wide into the lane and weakened. NICE TRY RILEY chased the pace from the outside and was bumped by a rival by the half mile marker, four wide on the turn and came five wide off the bend and weakened. NOGUCHI stumbled at the break, reserved and was three wide on the turn and came four wide by the quarter pole but was not a threat. NATURAL HUNK took up at the start then was outrun while wide on the turn and never factored. REMEMBER THE CHIEF was reserved on the inside and raced two wide on the turn and never menaced.
