ZOFFARELLI (IRE) raced inside toward the rear early, edged to take closer order inside past the five eighths, continued to improve position while saving ground around the far turn, shot through between ATHENS MOON and the rail into the lane, vied inside of HAUNTED HAZE in upper stretch, drove to the lead near the furlong mark and ran on. HAUNTED HAZE led briefly after the break but overtaken by a very keen ATHENS MOON, tracked that foe around the bend and down the back straight, edged closer to that foe approaching the half, descended outside that foe to take the lead near the quarter-mile mark, vied with ZOFFARELLI to his inside in upper stretch, was headed by that one near the furlong mark and chased on second best. TIME MUSE was briefly forward early but settled back to chase the leading pair, took closer order past the five eighths, bid three wide on the far turn, was outkicked into the lane, vied inside of MENDELSSOHN JOY for the show and held that position. MENDELSSOHN JOY raced at the rear into the clubhouse turn, edged between HAUNTED HAZE and ZOFFARELLI approaching the half mile mark, raced in the three to four path between horses around the far turn, swung four wide into the lane, could not match HAUNTED HAZE or ZOFFARELLI in the lane, vied outside TIME MUSE for the show but was outfinished. ATHENS MOON was very keen to pass HAUNTED HAZE for the lead into the first turn, set the pace while clear down the backstretch, saved ground around the far turn, was confronted by HAUNTED HAZE to his outside and headed near the quarter pole, could not match that foe or ZOFFARELLI to his inside in upper stretch and weakened. CHROMED IMPULSE chased near the rear two wide into the first turn, edged closer three wide past the five eighths, raced in the four to five path on the far turn while at the rear of a still-compact field, floated five wide into the lane and came up empty.
