Footnotes
BRANT broke in and bumped BRIGANTE, sprinted clear and showed the way up the backstretch, led along the inside through the turn, given his cue when feeling DESERT GATE to the outside at the top of the lane, dug in under right-handed urging in the final furlong and held well. DESERT GATE stumbled leaving the gate, steadied when crowded between rivals early, angled to the inside and moved back into range, followed along the inside into the turn, tipped off the rail and bumped BALBOA past the five-sixteenths pole, took aim at BRANT two wide turning for home, challenged from outside through the lane, could not summon the needed final kick to get by the winner but was clearly second best. CIVIL LIBERTY stalked the pacesetter outside BALBOA early on, exited the backstretch in the four path, angled to the inside around the bend, came out a bit and bumped with LITMUS TEST midstretch and edged that rival for the show honors. LITMUS TEST tracked widest up the backstretch, went angled from the five path to the three path around the bend, drifted in and bumped with CIVIL LIBERTY midstretch and got edged by that rival for third. BALBOA was closest in pursuit in the early going, went three wide into the turn, moved into the two path, got bumped by DESERT GATE past the five-sixteenths pole, chased outside CIVIL LIBERTY entering the lane and weakened. BRIGANTE got bumped by BRANT leaving the gate, lagged behind to the stretch, angled out in the lane and never got involved.
