Footnotes
JOURNALISM , stayed along the inner rail the first turn and down the backstretch, was under urging approaching the far turn, moved up inside foes, was taken to the two path seeking room at the head of the stretch, advanced between horses, checked when bumping with GOAL ORIENTED on his outside and CLEVER AGAIN on his inside near the three sixteenths, recovered and swung outside inside the eighth pole, closed determinedly and got up nearing the finish. GOSGER prompted the pace under rating outside CLEVER AGAIN, overtook that one entering the stretch, opened up in mid stretch and gave way grudgingly. SANDMAN lacked speed, stayed well removed from the inner rail down the backstretch, swung five wide leaving the far turn and rallied. GOAL ORIENTED remained along the inner rail stalking the pace down the backstretch and into the far turn, eased out approaching the stretch, came into the lane three wide, checked when bumping with JOURNALISM in upper stretch then weakened. HEART OF HONOR (GB) , a bit fractious in the starting gate, was slow to begin, lacked speed, swung very wide in upper stretch and passed tired rivals. RIVER THAMES bobbled slightly at the break, raced three wide the first turn, stalked the pace outside horses down the backstretch, floated four deep leaving the far turn and weakened in the drive. PAY BILLY , no factor, passed tired horses late. AMERICAN PROMISE , keen to go between horses the first turn, raced in mid pack to the far turn, came into the stretch three wide, weakened and drifted in near the eighth pole. CLEVER AGAIN sprinted clear and was taken to the inner rail entering the first turn, remained along the rail setting the pace to the stretch, was hooked on his outside by JOURNALISM in upper stretch, was taken up when roughed soon after, dropped back and was eased. There was a stewards' inquiry concerning the run in upper stretch but no action was taken.
