COACH CRONIN dueled from outside up the backstretch and around the turn, put a head in front with a furlong remaining and powered away from MR. MACHUPICCHU in deep stretch. MR. MACHUPICCHU dueled from inside holding a short advantage over COACH CRONIN to the top of the lane, lost command at the eighth pole, yielded to the winner midstretch and stayed on for a clear second. SPECIAL CLUB got bumped on both sides leaving the gate, chased between rivals then dropped off the pace, tucked inside for the turn, hugged the rail to the stretch, summoned a mild rally and outfinished ONE SMOKIN DUDE for third. ONE SMOKIN DUDE chased from inside, moved off the rail in upper stretch and got edged for the show honors. AFTERNOON NAP was antsy in the gate, bumped with SPECIAL CLUB at the start, was closest in pursuit of the dueling leaders early, took aim two then three wide on the turn but weakened in the drive. SILVER I AM tracked three deep into the turn, fell out of range around the bend, came two wide into the stretch and faded. GALLAND DE BESOS broke in and bumped SPECIAL CLUB, trailed well off the rail then outside a rival to the turn, rounded the bend three to four wide and failed to menace.
