SURFIN' U. S. A. pursued in range two wide into the turn, crept closer around the bend, steered out at the top of the stretch, fought three deep into the final furlong, seized command midstretch, had the rider fumble his crop at the sixteenth pole and won going away under hand urging. COSMIC HEAT trailed along the rail into the turn, drew closer around the bend, stayed on the fence in the lane and got by WILL HAPPEN to earn second. WILL HAPPEN was off slow to begin then moved quickly to a forward position, challenged from outside with a quarter mile remaining, took over in upper stretch, yielded to SURFIN' U. S. A. and got edged for the place. UMBRALLE was closest in pursuit from inside, challenged for command leaving the backstretch, took over on the turn, confronted by WILL HAPPEN late on the end, relinquished the lead in upper stretch and flattened to fourth. BOURBON AND GINGER sprinted clear and showed the way keenly in hand up the backstretch, took pressure from UMBRALLE approaching the turn, lost command when lugging out badly on the turn, eased in the lane before being pulled up in deep stretch and walked off.
