FIONELLO lacked early speed, made progress along the rail through the turn, steered out into the stretch, closed into range with a sixteenth remaining, surged late and nailed THIRSTY REBEL at the wire. THIRSTY REBEL pressed the leader from outside in the early going, headed that rival with three furlongs remaining, gained the advantage late on the turn, put TOMMY NORRIS away in upper stretch, carried a clear but diminishing lead into the last sixteenth and got caught on the line. GALLOPING GHOST chased from inside then moved into the two path around the turn, rallied inside THIRSTY REBEL late but lacked the need final kick. TOMMY NORRIS showed the way early with THIRSTY REBEL to his outside, headed by that rival at the three-eighths pole, lost command late on the bend, failed to kick on with THIRSTY REBEL in upper stretch and weakened in the late stages. SOUTHERN MELODEE chased widest up the backstretch, went five wide into the turn, quickly moved into the four path and faded down the lane. SAMMY DAVIS chased in the four path leaving the backstretch, moved into the three path following in range around the bend and tired in the stretch.
