Footnotes
JOHN METCALFE took contact from inside shortly after the start, tracked a bit off the rail in the early going, bid three deep at the three-eighths pole, dueled two wide at the quarter pole, led into the stretch, battled with THROWTHEFIRSTPUNCH into the final furlong, resisted over outer trio in the last sixteenth and was able to hold on. ROBIN OLDS traveled in the two path near the back, outside a rival on the backstretch, gained three then four deep on the far turn, rallied four deep into the last sixteenth, drifted in and bumped FLASH OF LIGHTNING late and just missed. THROWTHEFIRSTPUNCH broke out and bumped, raced in mid-pack on the inside, moved into range on the backstretch, made run four then three deep around the far turn, dueled outside JOHN METCALFE into the final furlong, fought between rivals in the last sixteenth and got bumped twice approaching the wire. FLASH OF LIGHTNING raced in the two path at the back early, gained ground into the far turn, chased three deep at the quarter pole, rallied between foes into the final sixteenth, then got knocked into inner rival and steadied near the wire. POSITIVE TIMES set the pace along the rail under pressure, headed at the quarter pole, relinquished the lead shortly after and folded in the lane. PRACTICAL BLAME settled in the two path then moved inside, closed in on the backstretch, asked along the rail then in the two path on the far turn and weakened down the lane. FARMER TOM lost his path leaving the gate, trailed on the inside, gained ground late on the backstretch, continued on the fence around the far turn, ran into minor traffic turning for home and could not threaten. TAKE ANOTHER SWING got bumped into outer rival at the start, prompted the pace from outside to the far turn, failed to keep up past the five-sixteenths marker and tired in the stretch. THERE WAS AN INQUIRY INVOLVING THE STRETCH RUN BETWEEN THE TOP FOUR FINISHERS LATE IN THE RACE. THERE WAS ALSO AN OBJECTION LODGED BY THE RIDER ABOARD FLASH OF LIGHTNING AGAINST ROBIN OLDS DURING THE SAME INCIDENT. FOLLOWING A REVIEW, THE STEWARDS UNANIMOUSLY RULED TO DISQUALIFY ROBIN OLDS FROM SECOND TO FOURTH FOR DRIFTING IN AND KNOCKING FLASH OF LIGHTNING INTO THROWTHEFIRSTPUNCH, COSTING BOTH RIVALS A CHANCE AT A BETTER PLACING.
