PAYNES SPIRIT was under a snug hold travelling well just outside off the pacemaker along the backside, edged up shadowing the frontrunner outside on the bend, loomed menacingly three wide between horses turning for home, battled relentlessly outside in the final furlong and grinded away on the leader in deep stretch to inch away for the win in the final few strides. PHILIP BANKS broke sharp getting the early advantage, controlled the pace moving comfortably up top by a narrow margin throughout the turn, was holding on just off the rail at the top of the lane, had the winner outside bearing down at the furlong pole, battled stubbornly inside in the final sixteenth of a mile but could hold on nearing the wire losing the nod at the finish line. SPEEDY BEAR drafted behind the frontrunner having the fence down the backstretch, settled smartly on the rail in the second flight watching the contesting pair around the oval, shifted to the two path for the drive, was no match for the lead twosome who had it to themselves in the final furlong but closed belatedly to win the show battle inside in deep stretch. NEXT PITCH settled in midfield going three deep outside of runners, moved to the lead duo going three wide outside of horses on the turn by the quarter pole, shifted to the four path in the thick of things straightening out for home but stalled with a sixteenth remaining settling for a minor placing in the end. DEWOLF travelled with runners on either side sitting in mid-pack, was roused for more between horses in midturn, offered little response unable to quicken with others by the quarter pole and finished up in the three path running one paced in the stretch drive. SUNDAY'S WELL was unhurried on the rail in the early going seeing the field, lagged well behind rivals in the running around the oval and could only manage to pass a weary straggler in deep stretch. SIGNATURE SIR hopped on the start, had a stalking role close to the back end down the backside, made little improvement around the bend and showed little, unable to offer any sort of offense in the stretch running.
