EAST AVENUE showed the way unencumbered in the three to two path, dug in as an outer rival challenged in upper stretch, repelled that foe in the final furlong and held firm from an inner bidder late. BURNHAM SQUARE leaned outwardly and bumped a foe at the start, tucked along the inside while settling into tracking stride around the first turn, sustained rail aim in upper stretch, chased into the final furlong, progressed gradually to edge place in the final sixteenth but needed more to reel in the leader. COAL BATTLE took contact from an inner rival leaving the gate, checked when put in tight quarters between the top pair passing the wire for the first time, recovered to stalk the loose leader from the three path, pressed around the far turn before offering a bid in upper stretch, but was fended off through midstretch and yielded place to an inner rival in the final sixteenth. FINAL GAMBIT broke inwardly, trailed the short field while saving ground around the first turn, moved out to the four path with five furlongs to go, responded to rousing and inched closer into the far turn, but emptied out while still trailing entering the lane and only managed to chase from there.
