ROAR OF THE BEAST made the lead leaving the backstretch, remained along the rail and eagerly pulled away through the stretch while kept under encouragement. STEPPE , eased outside leaving the backstretch, circled the turn three wide, remained on his left lead and failed to menace the winner. EL GUTY set the early pace outside the winner, remained in the two path around the turn and faded in the drive. SHERMAN FURY , no factor racing well off the inner rail, retreated. FORMULATE , rank soon after the break, swerved in, was pulled up and walked off. There was a stewards' inquiry concerning the early running but no action was taken.
