Footnotes
PILOT COMMANDER broke well then stalked close up to the inside, looked to bid from the fence approaching the five-sixteenths pole but had to pause when lacking enough space, gained an opening at the quarter pole quickly challenged outer rivals, seized command in upper stretch, emerged clear with a sixteenth remaining and was kept busy to the wire. FOR ALL MANKIND tracked outside horses up the backstretch, drew closer into the turn, bid three deep around the bend, fought to midstretch, got outkicked by PILOT COMMANDER in deep stretch but managed to edge SPIRIT OF MAKENA for the place honors. SPIRIT OF MAKENA stalked for a bit then latched onto the early leader from outside at the half-mile pole, dueled around the turn and put a head in front at the quarter pole, lost command in upper stretch, fought between rivals to midstretch, then lost second to FOR ALL MANKIND late. FORT BRAGG chased along the inside then moved off the rail and tugged the rider forward leaving the backstretch, rounded the bend two then three wide and flattened down the lane. VLAHOS grabbed the early lead from outside and crossed over, took pressure at the half-mile pole, headed past three-eighths marker, relinquished the lead with a quarter mile remaining, checked between runners shortly after and faded in the drive.
