DEEP BLUE tracked the top pair from off the rail, drew closer leaving the backstretch, challenged three deep on the turn, dueled outside A FRIEND OF MINE with a quarter mile left to run, inched ahead approaching the eighth pole, put A FRIEND OF MINE away midstretch and was in-hand approaching the wire. A FRIEND OF MINE dueled from inside, held a short lead over outer rivals at the five-sixteenths pole, dueled with DEEP BLUE into the stretch, relinquished the lead outside the eighth pole, yielded to the winner midstretch and stayed on for a clear second. JOYFUL MISCHIEF lacked early speed under coaxing, had one rival beat entering the turn on the inside, moved into the two path outside the quarter pole, steered out further in the drive and showed a mild response to gain third and whittle the gap on the top pair. GATHERED away quickest then dueled outside A FRIEND OF MINE for command, came under a ride early on the turn, fought between rivals briefly at the five-sixteenths pole, could not kick on with the top pair late on the bend and weakened in the drive. MUSIC LADY dropped off the pace under coaxing, trailed two wide into the turn, angled to the inside and was never a factor.
