Footnotes
SMOOTH CRUISEIN was off slow from inside, moved into range early, chased along the fence then in the two path around the bend, tipped out into the lane, drifted inward in upper stretch, moved back out at the eighth pole, latched onto MELLENCAMP with a sixteenth remaining and drove past approaching the wire. MELLENCAMP away quickly to take control under pressure, lost command to TOUGHNESS approaching the half-mile pole, dueled with that rival into the turn, regained the advantage around the turn, inched ahead at the eighth pole, put TOUGHNESS away midstretch, then got tested by SMOOTH CRUISEIN in deep stretch, finished gamely but was overtaken nearing the line. JOURNALISM dropped back in the early stages, went three wide into the turn, angled over to the rail around the bend, steered off the fence in the drive and put in a late run for third. TOUGHNESS broke just a hair slow but still came away with the field, raced outside the top pair then put a head in front while dueling with MELLENCAMP at the half-mile pole, fought on even terms in the two path through the turn and lost command at the quarter pole, stayed alongside the leader to the eighth pole, yielded midstretch and weakened late. LEGITIMATE bobbled slightly but still came away well, pressed the leader to the half-mile pole, chased leaving the backstretch, took the turn two then three wide and weakened in the drive.
